CrunchBang

CrunchBang ist ein Derivat mit minimaler Hardwareanforderung, das den Fenstermanager Openbox und zahlreiche GTK+-Applikationen verwendet. CrunchBang ist in drei Variationen erhältlich: einer Standard Edition, einer Lite Edition mit nur wenigen vorinstallierten Programmen und einer Eee PC Edition für den Asus Eee PC.

Installing CrunchBang Linux

CrunchBang Linux comes in three editions: Standard Desktop Edition, Lite Edition, and CrunchEee Eee PC Edition. Your author opted for the Standard Desktop Edition. CrunchBang Linux, like its parent distribution, is available as a live cd image. Of course, the best performance is achieved when installing the distribution on the SSD or hard disk. Your author used Unetbootin to write the iso image to a USB pen drive and booted the live distribution. The installer (started by right-clicking on the desktop and choosing "Install") looks familiar: it is the well-known seven-step installer of Ubuntu's live cd.

Basically, the alternative installation method involves preparing a "CLI" installation of Ubuntu, before downloading a shell script which will download and install all the packages and customisations needed to transform the system into CrunchBang Linux.

Note: scripts currently only work for i386 builds.

The scripts need to be run as root. It is not recommended that the scripts be run from a full Ubuntu installation [at least, I have not attempted this myself]. If you want to give the scripts a try, follow these instructions:

1. Prepare a "CLI" only installation of Ubuntu. I find that using the Ubuntu MinimalCD is best for this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

2. Download the script with the following command:
wget http://crunchbang.org/misc/crunchbang-installer.sh

3. Make the script executable with the following command:
chmod +x crunchbang-installer.sh

4. Run the script as root with the following command:
sudo ./crunchbang-installer.sh

5. Follow the on-screen instructions and reboot when finished.

Success! Installing 8.04 with 64mb of ram was a terrible experience, there were times it would freeze up for hours and I thought for sure it had failed. But once I got the command line installed, the Crunchbang Lite installation was quick and painless. I am typing this right now with Firefox, Thunar, Gedit, and the terminal all running, using about 42mb of ram and 100mb of swap. Crunchbang has definitely edged out Fluxbuntu as my lightweight environment of choice, kudos!
